What is Application Virtualisation?

The concept behind application virtualisation is simple. It’s all about separating the application away from the operating system (OS) and making this accessible to any user on virtually any device.   This isn’t a new idea, and has in fact been available from Citrix since Winframe since 1994.

Every user that accesses the application runs it in their own private protected space within the server, and simply views the execution from their own device remotely.

The application virtualisation infrastructure is primarily built around Microsoft Remote Desktop Services (2008) or Microsoft Terminal Services (NT4.0, 2000, 2003).  The application is installed once on the server, and is then accessible remotely by multiple people.

The client uses specific protocols to communicate between the client and the server, and its these protocols that are the key to the decision making process. Microsoft solutions use the RDP protocol (or Remote Desktop Protocol), whilst technologies such as 2X, Ericom and Systancia use their own enhanced RDP / RDS protocol.  Citrix XenApp, although using the server technology uses its own protocol (ICA).

The differences and advantages between these technologies and protocols are vast, and this is where Axess Systems can assist you in finding the best Application Virtualisation technology though our Pathfinder Services.

How does Application Virtualisation benefit you?

The Benefits of Application are vast and include:

  • Centrally manage all of your desktops and applications, thereby increasing efficiency
  • Lower the cost of having to send or recruit IT support to manage multiple sites
  • Secure corporate applications and data
  • Provide greater infrastructure scalability
  • Allow better software license management
  • Save money on licences
  • By utilising Thin Clients you can lower power requirements at each desktop thereby lowering your total power costs
  • Enable secure desktop access anytime, from anywhere
  • Possible cost savings on IT hardware when done at refresh intervals
