Green IT
No matter what aims and objectives you have for your IT network, an important consider ation has to be the impact it has on the environment.
This is not “green wash”. With soaring energy costs the importance of reducing energy consumption is not just good for the environment; it’s good for your organisation.
Equally “greening your IT” is not just concerned with reducing your direct energy costs associated with running your IT. It also should be viewed as a way of implementing carbon reduction schemes by enabling home working, and the amount of IT support trips, thereby reducing the amount of car travel.
If you are looking to implement green IT, we can work in conjunction with you to implement Green IT from the data centre to the desktop.
So how can we help you Green your IT?
Data Centre Services
Server Virtualisation – If you have a rack of servers, then implementing virtual servers is a proven way to reduce the environmental impact of the data centre. Implementing virtual servers doesn’t just reduce energy usage through the consolidation of hardware, but also with less hardware the cooling requirement is also reduced.

Managed Hosting
As an alternative to procuring and hosting your own virtual servers, we can also provide you with our managed hosting solution. SmartStage utilises virtualised servers our secure data centre.

Storage Virtualisation
Consolidating your storage by pooling your storage requirements results in far fewer unused disks spinning, and thereby reduces power consumption. By tiering your storage and using the right storage for each type of information, you can utilise software which utilises disk spin-down technologies for archive data, which is infrequently accessed.

Desktop Services
Virtual Desktops and Application Virtualisation enable you to provide your users with the same “PC experience” from any device. This flexibility means you can provide home working.

Thin Clients – replace your PCs with energy efficient units
With Virtual Desktops you can utilise energy efficient Thin Clients. As these are much smaller than the modern PC, the associated manufacturing, packaging and transport costs, are much less.
And the savings don’t stop once the Thin Clients are installed. A Thin Client device will use approximately 10% of the power needed to run a standard PC, the ongoing cost savings, and reduction electricity usage is incredible.
With no moving parts, such as fans and hard drives, there are fewer things that can go wrong, thereby improving reliability, and meaning fewer trips to the desk by IT support staff.
The other benefit of the Thin Client having no moving parts is that the units produce a lot less heat. The average PC converts roughly 50% of its electricity to heat, which then means air conditioning is required to help cooling, further increasing costs and the associated impact on the environment.
Improved reliability also means an increase in the life of the units - the average life span of a Thin Client device is five to seven years, compared to a 3 to 5 year life of a PC.
And when it is time finally time for replacement, there are less materials that need to be recycled.
