Welcome |
Welcome to the
November edition of the Axess Systems
Newsletter. The Christmas rush is now well and truly in full effect and already in the Axess Systems
offices, we have been singing Christmas Carols in joyous expectation!
This month we focus our attention on the
dynamic world of mobile computing, as across
industries organisations are reaping the
benefits of solutions with greater power,
communications and features.
Most of the leading players now offer a mobile thin
client, offering organisations the
convenience of a laptop with the benefits of
greater battery life (no moving parts),
easier manageability and higher security. In
addition, the emergence of 'ruggedised' mobile
units now means that the traditional
boundaries where organisations left there IT
can now be crossed.

PDAs Increase
Productivity
|
|
The proliferation and
increased transfer speed of communications
and an emergence of powerful handheld
devices is helping organisations to realise
true gains in time, efficiency and service
levels.
One
such organisation is United Utilities of
North West England, a utilities company that
serves 20 million people and employs
c.9000. A recent pilot of GPRS-enabled
handheld devices reaped 170 saved hours per
week in travel times and reducing duration
of leaks.
Whatever engineers locations are, they are
able to file real-time reports of leaks via
the PDA, leaving no opportunity for omitted
information and enabling leaks to be
recorded on the company’s system within an
hour of being reported
(Computing,
09/07).
A recent adoption of similar technology
involves 27 local councils in England
piloting a scheme with bar codes being
attached to bins to monitor and record
tenants compliancy with council rules on
disposal. Binmen use handheld scanning
devices to read the barcodes as bins
are collected. Details of recycling
participation, damage and proof of
collection are recorded and sent back to a
central system that issues warning letters
and enforcement notices (Computing,
09/07)

Mobile Thin Clients - Wyse X90 |
For the last two years we have seen an
emergence of reliable thin client laptops,
with most manufacturers now offering their
own units. At the same time we have
also seen a significant rise in identity
theft and a plethora of reports of data
protection being compromised through laptop
thefts and losses.
With units such as the Wyse X90,
users experience the mobility benefits of a
laptop, combined with the security that
comes with accessing corporate networks and
IT infrastructure with thin client.
With no moving parts, not only is no data
stored on an internal hard disk, but
longevity and reliability of the units is
increased, weight is minimal at just 4lbs
and a 12.1" widescreen WXGA TFT LCD delivers
great performance for graphics applications.
The X90 comes with Microsoft®
Windows® XP Embedded and WiFi connectivity,
whilst the X90e boasts the additions
of Smart Card for added security and
Bluetooth for Internet access through a
variety of mobile phone options.
