Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

VDI is the hottest topic in ICT at the moment. But for all of the hype, it is in fact a development of Server Based Computing.

VDI is the way future networks
will be structured.

It is clear that over the next couple of years VDI will become ‘the’ way to deliver and manage a network. It achieves the ultimate panacea for IT managers. One whereby you can deliver a full ‘PC desktop experience’ to your employees, but one where you still retain all of the control and benefits of a centralised server based computing model.

The core difference of VDI to traditional Sever Based Computing is that rather than every user having a ‘stripped out’ version of the servers’ operating system, in VDI each user has their own operating system. So in effect your employees have their own “Virtual Machine” running on a centralised server.

The benefits of this approach is that it enables your business to provide a highly secure network, but one which has the flexibility that users can upload their own specific applications to run on their ‘virtual machine’. And if a user manages to crash their virtual PC, by simply logging back in they will get a brand new personalised desktop still containing their data.

VDI also means that there are no longer issues with software conflicts, and it enables the use of highly graphical applications such as videos.

Like all emerging technologies, there are potential hurdles that you need to be aware of relating to VDI, in particular software licensing. We have encountered and solved these issues first hand, and our solution to this situation saved one organisation over £90,000.To discuss how VDI will fit in to your organisation’s IT strategy please call us and we’ll be happy to go through the process with you.
